First Time Visitor Guide

Coming for the first time? We know that can be nerve wracking, and we’re so glad you’re joining us! Below are some tips to make it a little easier:

How do I get there?

We are located at 2010 Congress Street in Lafayette, Indiana; across from Oakland Elementary School. Lafayette is about 60 miles northwest of the center of Indianapolis via U.S. 52 or I-65.

Where do I park?

All parking is on the church property with some spaces on the north side and a large parking lot on the west side of the church. The primary entrances are the west entrances. There are handicap parking spaces located in the north side lot of the church located near the north accessible entrance.

Please be considerate of others, particularly our seniors on canes and walkers, and be careful not to block other cars.

What do I bring?

All you need to bring is yourself and maybe a Bible, if you wish to follow along with the readings from your own.  There are also Bibles and hymnals in the pews.

When do I need to arrive?

Worship service is at 10:30 a.m.  but you’re more than welcome to come a few minutes early to park,  get some information, and grab a coffee in our parlor! Greeters will be available at the west entrance of the building off of the large parking lot.

What do adults wear?

You are welcome to wear whatever you are comfortable in. There is no “dress code” at Congress Street UMC. Some people wear their “Sunday Best,” while others “Go casual”.

What is the service like?

The Worship service takes place in the Sanctuary. It is a blend of traditional hymns, contemporary praise songs and special music by our choir and others. Children are invited to stay in the service with their families.  There is a time in the worship service that is solely focused on children and youth.   We celebrate communion the first Sunday of the month and ALL are welcome to join us in Communion with Christ at His table. We use unfermented grape juice during our communion services to welcome those who may be abstaining from alcohol for any reason. The sermons are bible-based either on a theme or a topic that will stand on its own.  Weekly services usually last about an hour, with some special services throughout the year lasting slightly longer.

May our child stay with us during the service?

Yes, children are always welcome to share worship with the congregation!  We do offer children’s activities in Children’s Church weekly after the Time With Young Disciples. This is time where we have dedicated staff to lead kids in a themed activity or craft, and they can learn about the love of Jesus at their own pace in a supportive environment. Activities are geared towards younger children in preschool or elementary school. We also have quiet activities in the back of the sanctuary where children can color, or look at a book.

Will there be time for me to connect with a pastor?

Our pastors greet all visitors to the church at the end of each service, but if you wish to speak to them in more length it’s best to schedule and appointment with them to ensure they have the dedicated time and space you deserve!

You can find more information about our pastoral staff here on our Staff Bios page.

Is your church accessible to people in wheelchairs?

Yes. We have handicap parking spaces in the north parking lot of the church. The church is accessible via ramp to the main floor. Handicap restrooms are located in the east hallway near the chapel on the east side of the building.
