FIRST TIME VISITOR GUIDE

How do I get there?

We are located at 2010 Congress Street in Lafayette, Indiana, across from Oakland Elementary School. Lafayette is approx 60 miles northwest of the center of Indianapolis via US-52 or I-65

Where do I park?

All parking is on the church property, with some spaces on the north side and a large lot on the west side. The primary entrances are the west entrances. There are accessible parking spaces on the north side of the church, near our accessible ramp entrance.

Please be considerate of others, particularly our seniors using canes and walkers, and avoid blocking other cars.

What do I bring?

All you need to bring is yourself and perhaps a Bible if you wish to follow along with the readings from your own. There are also Bibles and Hymnals in the pews.

When do I need to arrive?

Our worship service is at 10:30 AM, but you are most welcome to come a few minutes early to park, get some information, and grab a coffee, tea, or hot chocolate in our parlor!

Greeters will be available at the west entrance of the building, off the large parking lot.

What do adults wear?

You are welcome to wear whatever you are comfortable in. We have no "dress code" at Congress St UMC. Some people wear their "Sunday Best," while others go casual.

What is the service like?

Our worship service takes place in the Sanctuary. It is a blended service of traditional hymns, contemporary praise songs, and special music by the combined choir of Congress Street and Brown Street, and others. Children are invited to stay in the service with their families. There is a time during the worship service dedicated solely to children and youth.

We celebrate communion on the first Sunday of the month, and ALL are welcome to join us in Communion with Christ at His table. We use unfermented grape juice during our communion services in solidarity with those who may be abstaining from alcohol for any reason.

The sermons are bible-based either on a theme or a topic that will stand on its own. Weekly services usually last about an hour, with some special services throughout the year which may last slightly longer.

May our children stay with us during the service?

Yes, children are always welcome to join the congregation in worship!  We offer children's activities in the Children's Church each week after the Time With Young Disciples. This is a time where we have dedicated staff to lead kids in a themed activity or craft, and they can learn about the love of Jesus at their own pace in a supportive environment. Activities are geared toward younger children in preschool or elementary school. We also have quiet activities in the back of the sanctuary where children can color or look at books.

Will there be time for me to connect with a pastor?

Our pastors greet all visitors to the church at the end of each service, but if you wish to speak with them for longer, we suggest you schedule an appointment to ensure they have the dedicated time and space you deserve!

You can find more information about our pastoral staff on our Our Team page.

Is the church accessible to people in wheelchairs?

Yes. We have accessible parking spaces in the church's north parking lot. The church is accessible via a ramp to the main floor. Accessible restrooms are located in the east hallway near the chapel on the east side of the building.
